| MALAYA TROOPS RECEIVE MEDALS DECADES AFTER JUNGLE BATTLE |
08:00 - 03 February 2007 |
| Malaysian government representatives presented medals
to 105 former members of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, along with about
70 veterans from other sections of the armed forces, during last night's
ceremony. Hundreds of people packed into the Nottingham Oddfellows' Club, in Humberstone Gate, Leicester, for the event, which followed a formal reception at County Hall, Glenfield. Colonel Tajri Alwi, a defence adviser to the Malaysian government, presented the medals. Mick Bradbury, 62, from Leicester, said: "Most of us were only 18 or 19 when we went over there, so it was daunting. When we got over there though it was a case of being on lots of patrols during the six months we were stationed in the jungles." The Malaya conflict saw British, Commonwealth and Malayan forces fight the army of the Malayan Communist Party. * See Monday's Mercury for full story and pictures |
